Profile & expertise

With 50 years of experience and expertise in 3 key technologies – solid-state lasers, laser diodes and fiber lasers – the group designs, manufactures and markets high performance lasers for the scientific (laboratories and universities), industrial (manufacturing, defense, LiDAR sensors), and medical (ophthalmology).

Created through the business combination between the Keopsys and Quantel Groups in October 2017, LUMIBIRD is a mid-size firm with 500 employees and is present in Europe, US and Asia. The Group is listed on the Euronext stock exchange and has generated more than 100 M€ revenue in 2018.

On the autonomous vehicle market, Lumibird is already supplying companies developing automotive LIDAR solutions with its high peak power nanosecond laser diode solutions for flash LIDAR as well as its eye-safe fiber lasers for scanning devices, and is therefore ideally positioned to help the consortium succeed in developing next generation solutions for ADAS.

QUANTEL TECHNOLOGIES belongs to the LUMIBIRD Group, a mid-size firm with 50 years of experience and expertise in 3 key technologies: solid-state lasers, laser diodes and fiber lasers. It designs, manufactures and markets high performance lasers for the scientific (laboratories and universities), industrial (manufacturing, defense, LiDAR sensors), and medical (ophthalmology).

KEOPSYS INDUSTRIES belongs to the LUMIBIRD Group, a mid-size firm with 50 years of experience and expertise in 3 key technologies: solid-state lasers, laser diodes and fiber lasers. It designs, manufactures and markets high performance lasers for the scientific (laboratories and universities), industrial (manufacturing, defense, LiDAR sensors), and medical (ophthalmology).

Role in the Project

QUANTEL TECHNOLOGIES will provide 2 OEM illuminators based on high power 1550 nm laser diode emitters for the long range LIDAR. In that frame, the challenge will consist in designing innovative architectures able to work properly over an extended temperature range (-40 / 85°C).

KEOPSYS INDUSTRIES will provide a high power fiber laser source @ 1550 nm for the long range LIDAR. In that frame, the challenge will consist in designing an innovative architectures able to work properly over an extended temperature range (-40 / 85°C).

Guillaume Canat is currently the fiber laser R&D Manager of Lumibird. After graduating from Ecole Polytechnique in 2001 and specializing in optical telecommunication, he received a PhD in Laser physics in 2006. He worked as a research engineer at ONERA, the French Aerospace Lab from 2004 to 2016 where he was involved in fiber laser developments mainly for lidar and was participated in or managed several large-scale projects including FP7 European projects. He joined the group in 2016 to manage the development of the next generation of fiber lasers. He is author of 25 scientific papers and many international conferences. Within Lumibird R&D team he takes part into the development of pulsed and continuous wave fiber lasers for lidars and rangefinders, lidars, fiber coupled photonic components for innovative fiber laser systems.

Frédéric Chiquet is graduated in physics of materials and holds an MBA from the graduate school of management of Rennes (France). He is an expert in the design and the manufacturing of high value-added optical components and fibers, based on silica and non-silica glasses. He has joined Lumibird in 2007, where he has mainly managed industrial programs and manufacturing transfers. From 2013 to 2016, he headed the technical management of SensUp, subsidiary company specialized in lidar and range-finding. Frédéric has more than 30 years professional experience and is currently in charge of key technical prospective programs within the Group. Before joining Lumibird, he predominantly worked in the telecommunication field.

Hervé Moisan holds a PhD in Optics & Optoelectronics from the Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble (France), and an MS degree in Physics from “Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Physique de Grenoble”. He was early granted a Master degree in Physics from the “Université de Bretagne Occidentale”, Brest (France). He has been working for 24 years in the field of Optoelectronics and especially high-power laser diodes manufacturing and R&D, covering all stages of elaboration from the epitaxy to the diode processing, assembly and testing, including qualification and reliability for Space programs. He is now the head of the R&D on Laser Diodes at Lumibird.
